Academic coaching is a more holistic approach to educational support that extends beyond subject-specific tutoring. As an academic coach, I am concerned with the whole child, and their development as a student who may need help with executive functioning or who may still be finding their voice and discovering their passions. In addition to tutoring and homework support, I help students organize their materials, establish goals, and develop nightly/weekly work plans that help them to achieve those goals (executive functioning). I also help students discover what drives them, what they struggle with, how they learn best, and what they’re genuinely interested in and curious about (metacognition). My overall goal is to help students become independent, self-driven learners. An academic coaching schedule usually consists of daily or near-daily check-ins combined with longer work sessions.
Tutoring is the right option if your child needs support with subject-specific coursework, if they want to excel in particular classes, or if they need to develop essential academic skills like reading, writing, studying, preparing a presentation, etc. In my work as a tutor, I focus especially on homework support and skills development. My goal is also to help my students better understand the subjects they study and to become more engaged and interested in their studies. To relieve stress and enhance engagement, I scaffold assignments so it is easier for students to complete their work, whether they are reading, writing, studying, preparing for a discussion, or completing a project. As students gain confidence and ability in their work, I remove those scaffolds so students grow increasingly independent and self-driven. A tutoring schedule usually consists of one to three hour-long sessions per week.
In my career as an educator, I have coached upwards of 500 juniors and seniors in writing the college essay. I approach the composition process as a journey of self-discovery and self-expression for my students. Through multiple drafts, each student finds a direction that reveals an essential part of who they are, what drives them, and the ways in which they will contribute to the institutions they apply. The final product as well, after multiple drafts, will clearly demonstrate college-ready writing ability. In addition to college-essay coaching, I can help students with their admissions process: refining their search, planning ahead, meeting deadlines, writing supplements, and completing applications.
